Lakewood Car Accident Lawyers Who Deal With the Insurance Company So You Don’t Have To
Every weekday, Lakewood’s roads absorb the traffic of a city of 157,000 plus everyone passing through it — commuters on the 6th Avenue freeway, shoppers on Wadsworth and Alameda, light-rail riders and pedestrians on Colfax, and weekend traffic bound for the foothills on C-470 and Morrison Road. Sixteen people died in crashes in Lakewood in 2025. Many more were hurt badly enough to change their lives.
If you were injured in a car accident in Lakewood, the other driver’s insurance company is already working on your claim — for them, not for you. Jordan Law brings more than $550 million in recoveries and 20 years of Colorado trial experience to the other side of that table. You pay nothing unless we win.

Lakewood’s Most Dangerous Roads for Drivers
Wadsworth Boulevard — Lakewood’s main north-south artery and the road where the most serious crashes cluster. Six lanes, high speeds between signals, and constant turning traffic in and out of shopping centers from Colfax south past Alameda and Jewell. Left turns across Wadsworth and rear-end collisions in stop-and-go traffic are the two crashes we see most.
US 6 — the 6th Avenue freeway — The fastest road in the city, with short merges at Sheridan, Wadsworth, Kipling, Union, and Simms. Chain-reaction crashes in rush-hour backups are common, and the frontage road has a curve that produced two crashes in a single 24-hour period in February 2025, the second driver taking out the warning sign installed after the first.
West Colfax Avenue — Lakewood’s oldest commercial strip, shared since 2013 with the W Line light rail. Mid-block pedestrian crossings, bus stops, and closely spaced driveways make Colfax the corridor where cars, trains, and people meet most often — and where impaired and distracted driving crashes concentrate at night.
Kipling Street and Union Boulevard — The north-south routes to the Federal Center, St. Anthony Hospital, and the Kipling and Federal Center light rail stations. Heavy left-turn volume at Colfax, 6th, Alameda, and Jewell.
Alameda Avenue and Belmar — Lakewood’s downtown. Shoppers, pedestrians, and parking-lot traffic mix with a busy arterial; low-speed crashes here are frequent, and pedestrian crashes are the serious ones.
C-470, Morrison Road, and the foothills — Speeds go up and attention goes down heading toward Red Rocks, Bear Creek, and the mountains. Weekend recreational traffic, cyclists, and motorcyclists share these roads with commuters.
The city knows its problem corridors. Lakewood joined Jefferson County’s Vision Zero Safety Action Plan in late 2025, analyzing every crash from 2019 through 2024 to target the locations where people are killed and seriously injured, and it dropped residential speed limits to 20 mph in 2024. Those are good long-term steps. They don’t help the person who was hit last week.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Lakewood
- Call 911 and get checked out. St. Anthony Hospital, next to the Federal Center off West 2nd Place, is a Level I trauma center — the highest designation there is. Adrenaline hides concussions, whiplash, and internal injuries; get evaluated even if you feel fine.
- Get the report number. Inside the city limits, the Lakewood Police Department investigates crashes. On C-470 it’s usually the Colorado State Patrol. If police tell you to file a counter report — common during snowstorms, when Lakewood and neighboring cities go on “accident alert” for non-injury crashes — file it with the State of Colorado within 30 days.
- Photograph everything. Vehicles, the intersection, signals, skid marks, road hazards, and your injuries. Collect insurance information from every driver and contact information from every witness.
- Don’t trust the other driver’s insurance company. Jason Jordan hears the same objection all the time:
“I have people tell me all the time, ‘I’ve been dealing with this company for twenty years and they’ve always treated me great.’ And I say, have you ever made a claim? And they say no. Well, the person taking your money has been treating you great. Not surprising. Wait till you go to the claims department. You’re not dealing with the salesperson anymore. You’re dealing with the people who are having to pay the money back out.”
— Jason Jordan, Founding Partner, Jordan Law
Do not give them a recorded statement. Do not sign a medical release. You are not required to do either.
- Talk to a lawyer before you talk to an adjuster. We take over every insurance conversation and make sure nothing you say or sign shrinks your claim.

The Insurance Problem Most Lakewood Drivers Don’t Know They Have
Colorado requires only $25,000 per person in liability coverage — and a large share of drivers carry exactly that, or nothing at all. After a serious crash on Wadsworth or US 6, a single emergency room visit can cost more than the at-fault driver’s entire policy.
That is when your own policy becomes the most important one in the case: uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage pays when the other driver can’t, and medical payments (MedPay) coverage pays your bills regardless of fault. Both are on Colorado auto policies by default unless you rejected them in writing — and most people have no idea whether they did.
“Many of our clients don’t understand their insurance or don’t even know what insurance they have until after an accident. Does it protect you or does it protect other people? The worst time to find out that you don’t have the right insurance is when you need it.”
— Sarah Freedman, Attorney, Jordan Law
We review every policy that could apply — yours, the other driver’s, and sometimes the policies of relatives you live with. Learn more about uninsured and underinsured motorist claims, hit-and-run accidents, and what uninsured motorist coverage pays for in Colorado.
How We Build a Lakewood Car Accident Case
Evidence first. Police reports, 911 audio, witness statements, and surveillance or dash-cam footage — collected before it is overwritten. In serious crashes we preserve Event Data Recorder (“black box”) data showing speed, braking, and impact force, and we work with accident reconstruction experts.
Every liable party. The at-fault driver, their employer if they were working, a rideshare or delivery company, a bar that over-served a drunk driver, a vehicle manufacturer, or a public entity responsible for a dangerous road.
The full picture of your injuries. Medical records tell the insurer what was billed. They don’t tell a jury what your life is like now. We work with your doctors to document your treatment and your future needs, and we ask you to tell us everything — including the things that seem too small to mention.
Built for trial from day one. Insurance companies track which firms try cases. A demand from a firm with a $131 million verdict on its record is read differently than one from a firm that always settles.

Colorado Car Accident Law: What Lakewood Victims Need to Know
Deadlines
- Motor vehicle accidents: 3 years from the date of the crash to file a lawsuit (C.R.S. § 13-80-101).
- Wrongful death: 2 years from the date of death (C.R.S. § 13-21-204).
- Claims involving a government entity: If a City of Lakewood vehicle, an RTD bus or the W Line, or a CDOT-maintained road such as US 6 or Wadsworth is involved, written notice is required within 182 days (C.R.S. § 24-10-109).
Shared Fault
Colorado follows a modified comparative negligence rule (C.R.S. § 13-21-111). You can recover as long as you are less than 50% at fault, with your damages reduced by your percentage. Insurers argue comparative fault in nearly every left-turn, lane-change, and rear-end case — it is an argument, not a fact.
Damage Caps
Effective January 1, 2025, noneconomic damages (pain and suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life) are capped at approximately $1.5 million, which a court may exceed on clear and convincing evidence. There is no cap on economic damages such as medical bills, lost income, and future care.
Where the Case Is Filed
Lakewood lies entirely within Jefferson County, so a lawsuit is filed in the 1st Judicial District at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, CO 80401. Claims up to $25,000 may be filed in county court; larger injury cases go to district court.
Compensation in a Lakewood Car Accident Case
- Medical expenses — emergency care, surgery, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and future treatment, including care for brain and spinal cord injuries
- Lost income and reduced earning capacity
- Pain, suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life
- Permanent impairment and disfigurement
- Wrongful death damages for families — see our fatal car accident page
- Punitive damages in cases of reckless conduct
Your vehicle is a separate claim. As paralegal Kara Webb explains to every new client:
“If your vehicle was damaged in the accident, that is a separate claim from your bodily injury claim. You will handle that directly with either your insurance company or the at-fault driver’s insurance company. While we do not represent you for your property damage, we’re happy to help point you in the right direction.”

Lakewood Car Accident FAQs
What is the most dangerous road in Lakewood?
Wadsworth Boulevard, by most measures — six lanes of fast traffic with constant turning movements from Colfax south to Jewell. The 6th Avenue freeway and West Colfax Avenue are the other corridors where serious crashes concentrate.
How do I get a copy of my Lakewood police accident report?
Lakewood Police Department reports are requested through the department’s online records portal or in person at the Public Safety Center on South Allison Parkway. Reports take a few days to become available and carry a small per-page fee. When you hire us, we obtain it for you.
Police didn’t come to my accident. What do I do?
If an officer told you to file a counter report, or an accident alert was in effect, file your report online with the State of Colorado within 30 days. If anyone was hurt, the other driver left, or you suspect they were impaired or uninsured, call back and ask for an officer.
How long do I have to file a car accident lawsuit in Colorado?
Three years from the crash for injury claims, two years for wrongful death, and only 182 days to give notice when a government entity may be responsible.
Which court handles a Lakewood car accident lawsuit?
The 1st Judicial District at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Golden. Lakewood is entirely within Jefferson County.
The other driver had no insurance. Do I still have a case?
Often, yes. Your own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and MedPay may apply, and sometimes coverage carried by relatives you live with. We review every policy that could apply.
The insurance company says the crash was partly my fault. Can I still recover?
Yes, as long as you were less than 50% at fault. Your recovery is reduced by your percentage of fault, which is why insurers try so hard to raise it.
What does it cost to hire Jordan Law?
Nothing up front. The consultation is free, and we are paid only if we win or settle your case.
