Colorado Lane Filtering Law

October 18, 2024
Car Accident

If you live in Colorado and ride a motorcycle, you might have heard about something called lane filtering. But what is it, and is it legal in Colorado? In this blog, we’ll explain the Colorado lane filtering law, how it works, and what you need to know as a motorcyclist or driver.

What is Lane Filtering?

Lane filtering is when a motorcyclist moves between two lanes of slow-moving or stopped cars. This allows the motorcycle to move ahead in traffic rather than waiting in line with the other vehicles. Lane filtering can help motorcyclists avoid getting rear-ended in stop-and-go traffic and reduce traffic jams.

Is Lane Filtering Legal in Colorado?

As of now, lane filtering is illegal in Colorado. Motorcycles must follow the same rules as cars. They have to stay in their lane and wait in traffic just like other vehicles. Breaking this law can lead to fines and even tickets.

There have been talks about changing the law to allow lane filtering in certain situations, like when cars are moving at low speeds. Some states, like California, allow lane filtering under specific conditions, but Colorado hasn’t made that change yet.

Why Do Some Riders Want Lane Filtering?

Many motorcyclists believe lane filtering is safer for them. When motorcycles are stuck in traffic, they can be rear-ended by distracted drivers. Lane filtering allows them to keep moving, which helps them stay safe. It can also reduce traffic jams because motorcycles don’t take up as much space on the road as cars.

Safety Concerns with Lane Filtering

While lane filtering might sound like a good idea to motorcyclists, it can be dangerous if not done correctly. Drivers may not see a motorcycle coming up between the lanes and could accidentally hit the rider. Also, sudden lane changes by cars could put motorcyclists at risk.

That’s why it’s important for drivers and motorcyclists to follow traffic laws and pay attention to each other on the road.

Will Colorado Change Its Lane Filtering Law?

Right now, there’s no official word on whether Colorado will allow lane filtering in the future. Some riders hope the law will change to make lane filtering legal under specific conditions. Until then, it’s important for motorcyclists to follow the current law and stay safe on the road.
