The Anatomy of a Traumatic Brain Injury

September 22, 2016
TBI

As one of the most severe types of injuries, a traumatic brain injury can have a severe impact on a person’s life. Because there are so many factors involved and varying degrees of severity, many people are unaware of exactly what a brain injury entails. A brain injury may only produce symptoms mimicking a headache or could result in long-term and life-altering damages. It is important to understand exactly how a traumatic brain injury occurs, how serious it is, and what treatments are available.

First, it is crucial to understand the different parts of the brain and their respective functions. Each hemisphere of the brain is broken into lobes with different responsibilities within the body. The occipital lobe helps to interpret what a person sees. The parietal lobe controls various movements of the body, the sense of space, and the body’s sensation. The temporal lobe is responsible for the language control, emotions, and assists with memory. The frontal lobe is responsible for the behavior, judgment skills, memory, and movement of eyes, trunk, and extremities.

The amount of damage done to the brain and the location of the damage can determine what functions are lost and what types of issues the victim may have over the course of their lifetime. The severity of the injuries can be categorized as either mild, moderate, and severe. The symptoms can worsen based on the categorization of the injury. For instance:

  • A mild traumatic brain injury may result in brief loss of consciousness, headaches, nausea, and dizziness.
  • A moderate traumatic brain injury may result in loss of consciousness for up to 24 hours, short-term memory loss, and confusion.
  • A severe traumatic brain injury may result in long-term memory loss, cognitive issues, paralysis, or coma.

There are a number of situations that can cause someone to sustain a traumatic brain injury. These include motor vehicle collisions, falls from heights, acts of violence, sports injuries, slip and fall accidents, and more. When this happens, it is important for the victim to seek medical treatment as soon as possible to assess the injury and begin treatment.

Far too often, severe traumatic brain injuries can result in lifelong damages that impact the victim’s way of life. When the injury is caused by negligence, the victim or his or her family may be able to take legal action against the responsible party. At the Law Offices of Jordan & Associates LLC, our Denver brain injury attorneys understand the difficulties that many brain injury victims are going through and what they must endure.
