Colorado Crash Fatalities

Driver safety remains a serious issue in Colorado, with fatal crashes seemingly increasing every year. Why are crash fatalities on the rise? We wanted to find out.

With data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), we developed an interactive dashboard that gives greater insight into motor vehicle crash deaths in Colorado.

Key Findings

• In 2016, Colorado recorded 608 traffic fatalities – a 15 percent increase from the previous year.
• 34 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths involved alcohol.
• Males outnumbered females in crash fatalities nearly 3 to 1, accounting for 72 percent of traffic fatalities.
• Fatal crashes increased significantly across all vehicle types, with the greatest increase occurring in large trucks – a 38.9 percent increase from 2015.
• With 40 crash deaths, Interstate 25 had the highest number of fatalities by highway, followed by Interstate 70 with 24 deaths.

Why We Did This

Presenting crash fatality data in a convenient, straightforward visual format not only raises awareness of any issues on Colorado’s roads, but may also inform greater improvements to the state’s driver safety measures.

Ultimately, we believe calling attention to this data is a good start to making Colorado roads safer for everyone.
